Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She lived with her grandmother until she was six years old, and was so poor that she had to wear dresses made out of potato sacks to school. When she was six, she moved to Milwaukee with her mom. A few months later, her mother died from a cocaine overdose. Due to several kinds of abuse, Oprah ran away from home when she was thirteen years old, and a year after she got pregnant. Her newborn son died shortly after. A little later in her life, she got a full scholarship to Tennessee State University, a historically black institution, where she studied communication.

Oprah Winfrey is a household name, not only in America but throughout the world. She has graced Americans’ televisions for the over twenty-five years. Oprah has impacted many lives across the globe, whether it be first hand or through her powerful words of wisdom and encouragement. Many know of Oprah as we see her today; however, they don’t have knowledge of her past and the circumstances that shaped and molded her into the woman that we all know today. Oprah Winfrey did not always have the things she possesses today, but it was the determination and drive that brought her this far. Her father was a religious man and expected a lot of Oprah. He was very strict and offered Oprah the structure she needed in her life. He expected her to earn the highest grades, attend church, and set an example of a model student for those younger than her. Oprah attended East Nashville High School, this is where she flourished. Oprah was in a number of clubs. She was in the drama club, forensics club, honor society, and a member of the student council. High School is where Oprah began to develop the personality that we all know and love today. (Garson) At the age of 17, she won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant and was offered a job working for a local radio station. During her senior year she was voted Most Popular Girl. She majored in Speech Communications and Performing Arts. Oprah chose to attend this school because she won a scholarship. Oprah excelled throughout college, but dropped out before graduation to take a job offer. Oprah took a job as a reporter and co-anchor of for an evening news program in Baltimore, Maryland.
